Garden Designer or Landscaper

What’s the difference between a garden designer and a landscaper?

… and which should you choose? Here are some hints:

Garden Designers:

  • A garden designer is predominently creative, imagining and then drawing to scale your dream garden. The better ones have a thorough understanding of horticulture and construction aspects.

  • Perhaps better compared to an interior designer, the garden designer is an exterior designer with an eye for practical and aesthetic principles necessary for creating beautiful gardens that works for the client.

  • A good garden designer will know plant species, cultivars, suitability and requirements for your site.

  • A garden designer will normally rely on landscapers or builders to undertake the hard landscaping aspects of the garden.

Landscapers:

  • A landscapere is someone who will build your new dream garden. They are mostly from a construction background and focus more on hard landscaping with design maybe being their secondary skill.

  • A landscaper is usually less horticultural and designs may feature more general easy-care planting groups with more landscaping features e.g. terrace, patio, walls etc.

  • Landscapers may rely on garden designers to design the gardens they install.
